Tennessee Takes Best of the Rest Breaststroke Swimmer Hannah Marinovich (2024)

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all engagement news. For many, college swimming is a lifetime dream pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who have supported them along the way.

Hannah Marinovich has announced her verbal acceptance to the University of Tennessee beginning in fall 2024.

Marinovich is currently a junior at Clovis West High School and trains year-round with Clovis Swim Club in Fresno, California.

“I am so overjoyed to announce my verbal acceptance to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of Tennessee! I am so grateful to my family, coaches and friends for their endless support! GO VOLS #ladyvol”

Marinovich was featured in the Best of the Rest breaststroke category on SwimSwam’s “Far too early recruitment ranks” for the Class of 2024. She is a pure breaststroke swimmer and at 14 years old was one of the youngest athletes to compete in Wave II of the 2020 Olympic Trials. She qualified at age 13 in the 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:29.15, which is also the fastest time ever set by an American 13-year-old at the event.

Best SCY times:

  • 50 chest – 29.82
  • 100 chest – 1:02.99
  • 200 chest – 2:13.77

Top LCM times:

  • 50 chest – 32.44
  • 100 chest – 1:10.14
  • 200 chest – 2:29.15

Although Marinovich has struggled to match her 200-meter breaststroke time as of 2020, her 100-meter breaststroke time at both the short track and long track has improved over the past year. This summer she competed in the Speedo Summer Junior Nationals where she placed 11th overall in the 100m breaststroke (1:10.14). Her time broke her previous best in 2020 by over a second. She also attempted a time trial in the 50m breaststroke at the meet, where she set another personal best of 32.44.

Last December, she set best times in the 100m breaststroke (1:02.99) and 200m IM (2:10.19) and a season best in the 200m breaststroke (2:17.89) at the Speedo Sectionals. Her 100 breast was a personal best of just over a tenth and earned her 3rd place overall. Marinovich already set a personal best in the 200 IM (2:10.10) this month, improving by a few hundredths from her swim last December.

Marinovich is currently outside the SEC rating range for the 100 and 200 breaststroke. Last season it took 1:01.54 to reach the C Finals in the 100 and 2:13.36 to advance in the 200. Breaststroke wasn’t a major strength or weakness for the Vols at SECs last season, as they posted 58 points and 63 points in the 100 and 200, respectively. Mona McSharry was a leader in both events last season, winning the 100 in SECs with a 57.50 and finishing 3rd in the 200 in 2:07.29. Alexis Jager was the second best performer for the Vols and placed 5th in the 200 at SECs (2:08.42). Neither of them will be on campus when Marinovich arrives.

For next fall, the Vols have signed a very difficult breaststroke class. emily quick, from Sweden, holds the best LCM times of 1:06.64 and 2:28.38 in the 100 and 200 breaststroke. Fast is also there Tori Brostowitz (1:00.91/2:14.23) and Molly Blanchard (1:02.46/2:13.26), both of whom are within the SEC rating for at least one breaststroke. With the addition of Marinovich, the Vols appear to be building a deep breaststroke group for years to come.

Marinovich joins sprinters Josie Connelly and Jillian CrooksIMer Emily Brownand freestylers Ella Jansen. Brown was introduced as a #19 recruit at SwimSwam’s “Much too early recruitment ranks” for the high school class of 2024, while Connelly was also featured in the Best of the Rest section. Crooks and Jansen are both international athletes as Jansen is a member of Canada’s junior national team while Crooks represented the Cayman Islands at the 2020 Olympics.
