Strong start drives Bison #18 to defeat Binghamton

FARGO, ND — North Dakota State’s No. 18 wrestling program pulled off a win over Binghamton at the Scheels Center Friday night, off to a strong start en route to an 18-13 win.

The Bison (2-0) won their first three games and six of the first seven overall to carve an unassailable lead and remain unbeaten against the Bearcats (0-2) throughout.

Gaven Sax had the biggest win of the evening for the Bison as his attempt from behind over #33 Brevin Cassella at 174lbs helped secure the win. Sax was 2-1 down and heading for third, but secured a takedown with 14 seconds left and added a four-point nearfall to win 7-2.

Carlos Negrete Jr. and Fernando Barreto grabbed their first career dual match wins to start the evening. In the 125-pound match, Negrete drove an early takedown with a two-point close fall and a four-point close fall in the first period to go to a 9-2 win over Micah Roes.

Barreto, who wrestled as Bison in his first doubles, went 1-0 into the third of the 133-pound match after escaping in period two. He then secured a late takedown with 26 seconds left to take the win with a 3-1 decision over Anthony Sobotker.

#9 Dylan Drogemuller kept the momentum going as he utilized two takedowns in the first period and one in the second to earn a 7-5 win in the 141lb match against Nat Lucier.

After Binghamton clinched a big decision win at 149lbs, #8 Jared Frank extended the Bison lead before the break with an 11-4 decision over Conner Decker at 157 pounds. Franek had two takedowns in the first half and then a reversal to start the second to take a 6-1 lead. He would add a takedown, a penalty point and a drive timing in the third.

Coming out of the break with the 165lb match, #15 Michael Calendo continued his undefeated start to the season as he used two early takedowns and one drive timing to earn a 5-2 win over Will Ebert.

Binghamton would have three wins by decision in their last three games.

The Bison will be back on the road Sunday with a small group headed to Brookings, SD to compete in the Daktronics Open. Opening games begin at 9 a.m. at Frost Arena in South Dakota. The bison will return to doubles competition on December 9 when NDSU welcomes Minnesota to the Scheels Center.
