Clemson vs North Carolina betting analysis

With two weeks until the College Football Championship weekend, we already have the ACC Championship scheduled between Clemson and North Carolina.

The Tigers still have a chance to represent the conference in the College Football Playoffs, but to do that we’d have to see some wild events over the next two weeks.

Ahead of next week, the Tigers have their Instate Rivalry matchup against the SEC’s South Carolina Gamecocks as the Tar Heels will face North Carolina State. The ACC championship spread currently rests with Clemson, who is seven-point favored to win.

Tigers ready for Tar Heels Air Attack on Defense

If it weren’t for an out-of-conference loss to Notre Dame, the Tigers would be in the middle of the College Football Playoffs. They are undefeated in conference play, thanks largely to their defense, which is only allowing 20 points per game this season.

They’ve conceded just 318 yards per game, ranking 3rd in the conference, but 214 yards per game through the air, ranking 6th in the conference, and something the Tar Heels will continue to capitalize on.

They have a relatively balanced offensive offense with three players who have totaled over 420 yards down so far, including leadback Will Shipley, who has amassed 660 rushing yards and 13 rushing touchdowns.

They don’t have a key receiver, as no pass catcher on their roster has more than 506 receivers in the season leading up to their last game against South Carolina.

Six different pass catchers have caught multiple touchdowns this season. Quarterback DJ Uiagalelei has improved at Clemson every season.

For comparison: Last season he had nine touchdowns and ten interceptions in 374 pass attempts. He has 21 touchdowns and just six interceptions in 334 pass attempts so far this season. Tar Heels’ pass defense is horrendous, which could lead to multiple downfield opportunities for Uiagalelei.

North Carolina needs a defensive pull

The Coastal Division was up for grabs early in the season as many speculated Miami might represent that division in championship play. That observation quickly faded, especially after Tar Heels’ 27-24 win over the Hurricanes on October 8th.

It’s a tale of two worlds for North Carolina, however, with quarterback Drake Maye leading the charge with 3,614 passing yards, which is 3rd in the nation.

Though the Tar Heels on defense in the ACC are dead in terms of points allowed, pass yards allowed, and total yards allowed, many are scratching their heads over how they got to this point.

The only way to combat poor defense is with a great offense, which Maye used to lead the Tar Heels to the highest scoring team in the conference and produce the most passyards of any team in the ACC.

Wide receiver Josh Downs was the biggest beneficiary of Maye’s success with 878 total yards and 11 touchdowns. The Tar Heels will definitely need to defend if they are to have any chance of winning the ACC Championship in Charlotte.

Clemson vs. North Carolina ACC Championship Prediction

Clemson is a legitimate favorite in this game and if they win it will be on their defense.

They won’t be looking to match North Carolina on offense, instead looking to slow it down on the ground with Shipley and others in the Tigers’ fast attack.

If the over/under is 60, let’s look at a game with the under since only three games on Clemson’s schedule have exceeded that number all season.

Prognosis: Below 60 points
