Lauren Patterson gives the University of Kentucky a verbal commitment for 2024

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all engagement news. For many, college swimming is a lifetime dream pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who have supported them along the way.

With a year and a half of high school to improve on Lauren Patterson from Boone, North Carolina, has announced her engagement at the University of Kentucky for the fall of 2023. Patterson is currently in the middle of her junior year of high school at Watauga High School and swims at the Enfinity Aquatic Club.

Last spring, Patterson was a sophomore in two events at the NCHSAA (North Carolina High School) 4A State Championships, a meet composed of teams from the state’s largest schools. Her best result was in the 100 fly, where she placed 6th in a time of 55.60. She was slightly faster in the preliminary rounds of the event, posting a life best of 55.39. The event was won by Claire Curzan, who set the American record with a time of 49.24. Patterson also placed 14th in the 100 breast race, finishing the finals in 1:06.18.

Patterson continued her high school season with a strong showing at the NCSA Summer Swimming Championships in July. She rode eight events over the weekend and qualified for the finals in both 50 backstroke and 50 breaststroke. Her highest result was in the breast, where she placed 29th with a 34.81.

Best SCY times

  • 100 back – 56.57
  • 200 back – 2:06.98
  • 100 chest – 1:04.62
  • 200 chest – 2:29.24
  • 100 fly – 55.39

Even with over a year to improve before arriving in Lexington, Patterson already has times that would add strong depth to the Kentucky roster. Last season, she would have held the team’s fifth-fastest time in the 100 fly and seventh-best 100 breaststroke. Last year the Kentucky Fly Group was led by the now senior Caitlin Brooks, who won the B Finals at the SEC Championships in a time of 52.03. She placed 29th at the NCAA championships.

Patterson won’t be the only member of the Kentucky freshman class in 2024 to boast an impressive time in the 100 fly. Addison Reese, who was one of SwimSwam’s “Best of the Rest” in our Way Too Early recruitment lines, was already a 54.2 in the 100 Fly and has vocally endorsed the Wildcats.

Patterson and Reese will join Emma Finn, Hayden Penny, Taylor Grimleyand Bailey O’Regan as members of Kentucky’s Class of 2028.

Kentucky has consistently recruited talented recruiting classes, with their freshman class being ranked 15th in the country by SwimSwam this year. This group is led by a trio of Best of the Rest award winners Lydia Hanlon, Denise Phelanand Jordan Agliano. Hanlon entered college having already reached a 53.5 in the 100 backstroke while Agliano had fallen below 53.0 in the 100 fly.
