Kentucky vs Gonzaga: Basketball Match Prediction, Selection, Distribution, Odds, Live Stream, Watch Online, TV Channel

Two of college basketball’s most successful program brands meet in a seismic showdown Sunday when No. 2 Gonzaga hosts No. 4 Kentucky at Spokane Arena in the first meeting between the teams in 20 years. The last time the schools played was in the 2002 Maui Invitational, which was held early in the Bulldogs’ rise to national prominence and a few years before John Calipari took over the Wildcats.

Both teams have spent most of the past two decades at or near the top of college basketball but managed to dodge each other in the NCAA tournament. That’s why it was such big news in August when the programs announced a six-game streak for the next six seasons.

While it’s a top-five matchup for now, it’s possible that neither team will be in the top-five when the new AP Top 25 is released on Monday. After both teams lost marquee matchups last week, Sunday’s game could see a sense of desperation as both sides look to avoid a second loss before moving on to challenging non-conference boards.

Before the SEC game, Kentucky has a game against Michigan on December 4 in London and a showdown with UCLA at the CBS Sports Classic at Madison Square Garden in New York on December 17. Gonzaga travels to the Phil Knight Legacy event in Portland, Oregon next week and also plays Baylor and Alabama this month before diving into conference play. As big as these games will be, it’s possible none will be watched more closely than this one, as Calipari and Few take on two of the country’s most talented squads.

Kentucky vs. Gonzaga: Must know

Pairing of Stars: This match is a duel between 2021-22 CBS Sports Player of the Year Kentucky Big Man Oscar Tshiebwe and 2022-23 CBS Sports Preseason Player of the Year Gonzaga Big Man Drew Timme. Both are post-oriented veterans who are ill-suited to the modern NBA but have proven dominant at the collegiate level. Watching them play each other makes this one of the must-play games in the first month of the college basketball season.

Other Venue: Although this is considered one of Gonzaga’s home games in the six-game series, which includes two home games for each team and two competitions at neutral venues, it will not be played at Gonzaga’s traditional home stadium. Rather than being played at the McCarthey Athletic Center, affectionately known to most as the “kennel,” this game takes place at the much larger Spokane Arena. The off-campus venue may lack the intimacy of the kennel, but its 12,638-seat capacity gives this matchup the feel of a big game. Kentucky is scheduled to compete at the Kennel in 2027 for the final game of the series.

Jumps back: Kentucky throttled South Carolina State 106-63 on Thursday, but the Wildcats may still be feeling the pain of an 86-77 overtime loss to Michigan State in Tuesday’s Champions Classic. The Wildcats struggled with late-game execution and wilted when Tshiebwe fouled in first overtime. Gonzaga was beaten 93-74 in Texas on Wednesday after scoring a 64-63 win over Michigan State last Friday aboard the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln. The Longhorns forced 20 Gonzaga turnovers and hit 13 3-pointers against the Bulldogs.

Kentucky vs. Gonzaga Prediction, Tips

Featured Game | Gonzaga Bulldogs vs. Kentucky Wildcats

After playing on an aircraft carrier on Wednesday and then walking into a hornet’s nest in Texas, Gonzaga should be relived to be in familiar surroundings. Although this game is being played at Spokane Arena rather than the Bulldogs’ traditional home turf, it’s still their turf. Gonzaga could expect a classic offensive performance against a Kentucky team playing their third game in a week three time zones from home. Prognosis: Gonzaga -3
