College football tips, predictions, odds: Georgia vs Kentucky, Iowa vs Minnesota among week 12 best bets

I love this time of year. Over the next two weeks, we’ll see some of college football’s biggest rivalry games take center stage. Some will be big like USC vs. UCLA, while others like Iowa vs. Minnesota will play for fun trophies like the Floyd of Rosedale. However, this game will also affect the Big Ten West race, the winner of which earns the right to be crushed in the conference championship game. At least a couple of these games will appear in this week’s best bets.

Each week I will use this section to tell you what I think are some of the best bets for the weekend. I will also throw in a surprise of the week which will be a team that is at least a touchdown underdog that I pick to win straight. I’ll also give you tips on other games involving potential college football playoff teams.

Last week was another good performance for total score betting on this site. Maybe I should just do more of these because they pushed me back into positive territory for the season. The excitement of the week isn’t a point game, though, and I have a line I just can’t resist.

Week 12 tips

#1 Georgia in Kentucky

Featured Game | Kentucky Wildcats vs. Georgia Bulldogs

Georgia hasn’t taken its foot off the gas since the near miss in Missouri on Oct. 1. Since then, the Bulldogs have been as dominant as anyone else. Kentucky is reeling after losing four of its last six. The Wildcats appeared to have hit rock bottom with a loss to Vanderbilt, ending the Commodores’ 26-game conference losing streak. Don’t expect the Bulldogs to show mercy now. Selection: Georgia -22.5

Iowa near Minnesota

Featured Game | Minnesota Golden Gophers vs. Iowa Hawkeyes

The much-maligned Iowa offensive has found a spark over the past three weeks, averaging 27 points per game after averaging 14 points per game prior to this stretch. Iowa’s games have exceeded that number in three of their last four, and the Gophers have also exceeded that number in four of their last five games. We’re not asking much here to get past that low line. Tip: Over 32.5

Northwest at Purdue

Featured Game | Purdue Boilermakers vs. Northwestern Wildcats

As long-time supporters of my work know, I’m a Purdue graduate and fan, so you can probably understand why I burst out laughing when I saw that line. The total margin of victory in Purdue’s five FBS wins this season is 27 points. The Boilermakers have never beaten an FBS team by more than ten. I realize this isn’t a great Northwestern team, particularly offensively, but 20-point wins aren’t how Purdue rolls. I also like the U48. Choice: Northwest +20

trouble of the week

UConn in the Army

Featured Game | Army West Point Black Knights vs. Connecticut Huskies

Coach Jim L. Mora did a great job in his first season at UConn, qualifying the Huskies bowl when they had won just four games in their last three seasons (excluding 2020 when they skipped the season due to COVID-19). . And it’s not like UConn has been pounding on canned tomatoes; it has won 7-3 Fresno State and most recently 8-2 Liberty. Army has only beaten one FBS opponent this season, Louisiana-Monroe. Both teams are strong in the race which will keep the score low and make for a closer game. I like the team on a roll. Selection: UConn (+285)
